Hours:
12:30 pm – 5:00 pm every Sunday from October to May (season length may vary with funding).
Summary:
The Shrewsbury Public Library is seeking a motivated and service‑oriented Sunday Library Assistant to join our dedicated team. This entry‑level role allows you to gain hands‑on experience in a fast‑paced, community‑centered environment.
- Assist patrons in the use of facilities and resources in the Access Services area; answer inquiries in person and by telephone; provide basic direction, information, and instruction on library services and resources; assist with computers and OPAC.
- Circulate library materials, including books, kits, DVDs, and video games, by checking items in and out using the integrated library system; prepare materials for circulation and update patron accounts as needed.
- Use computers and online systems for entering and retrieving information in library databases and information systems.
- Assist patrons with locating materials, including those requested through interlibrary loan or other external sources.
- Use library databases and information systems to enter, retrieve, and manage data related to circulation, patron accounts, and inventory.
- Oversee the work of library pages, as needed.
- Perform special assignments and similar or related work as required.
- High school diploma required; minimum two years of relevant experience preferred, including at least one year in a library setting utilizing an automated integrated library system and electronic databases.
- Strong computer skills, professionalism, initiative, and ability to work independently.
- Equivalent combination of education, training, and experience is acceptable.
- Knowledge of library policies and procedures, automated circulation systems and information technology; knowledge of Integrated Library System, Evergreen, and the Dewey Decimal System.
- Ability to interact tactfully and appropriately with library patrons; learn computer operations and related library databases; operate library equipment.
- Excellent customer service skills, oral and written communication, basic research skills, and high dependability.
Minimal physical effort is required. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, speak, hear, use hands to operate equipment, push or pull book carts weighing up to 50 pounds and reach book shelves with hands and arms. Vision requirements: ability to read routine documents and use a computer. The employee may be required to stand for extended periods of time.
