Job DescriptionShrewsbury Public Schools is seeking a School Counselor (aka Guidance Counselor) for Oak Middle School, our 7th and 8th grade middle school, for the 2026‑2027 school year. The candidate will work with students to support academic, social, emotional, and behavioral development, and to facilitate transitions to high school.
Essential Responsibilities- Provide individual and group counseling support to students regarding social, emotional, and academic issues.
- Lead the implementation of the My Career and Academic Plan (MyCAP) framework for 7th and 8th grade students, supporting academic planning and career awareness.
- Coordinate 8th grade student activities related to moving up to high school, including informational sessions and the course selection process, and manage the student application process for vocational technical and private high schools.
- Serve as the liaison to the Shrewsbury High School School Counseling Department.
- Organize transition activities and school orientation for incoming 7th grade students.
- Deliver school counseling curriculum in a classroom setting.
- Participate as necessary in the team evaluation process for students receiving special education services and 504 accommodations.
- Consult and collaborate with school administration, school adjustment counselors, the district social worker, parents/guardians, and relevant community agencies to support students facing challenges that impact their academic, social, emotional, and behavioral progress.
- Perform additional tasks as assigned by the Principal, Director of Career Technical Education, or Director of Counseling and Mental Health Services.
- Licensure as a School Counselor or School Guidance Counselor, Grades 5‑12, from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
- Experience or familiarity with the My Career and Academic Plan (MyCAP) framework or similar academic and career planning approaches.
- Experience and/or training in meeting the counseling needs of a diverse population of students.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills.
- Ability to work flexibly in a changing environment.
- Understanding of the needs and behaviors of high school students.
- Demonstration of the values of Shrewsbury Public Schools.
