Job Description

Position:
Special Education Instructional Assistant

Grade levels/School year:

Shrewsbury Public Schools is accepting applications for a Special Education Instructional Assistant at Sherwood Middle School. We are interested in candidates who are invested in the achievement, equity, and access of all learners in and beyond the classroom. The hourly rate is $23.29-$25.72 based on experience. This is a full-time role working 31.25 hours per week when school is in session and is benefits-eligible.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • General support of a classroom or classrooms
  • Provide academic support and carry over of lessons developed by the teacher and special education teacher
  • Provide all accommodations delineated within a student’s designated IEP/504
  • Implement modifications developed by the classroom teacher and/or Special Education teacher
  • Develop materials based on specific instruction from the classroom teacher and/or Special Education teacher
  • Create opportunities and instruct students to be independent across their school day
  • Carry over instructional practices from related service providers (speech, OT, PT, Psychologist)
  • Potentially assigned to multiple classroom grades or teams
  • Implement behavioral/social support plans within the classroom for individual students or groups
  • Provide small- or whole-group instruction
  • Support Regular Education and Special Education students
  • Engage individuals and small groups in instructional activities
  • Share relevant learner information with teachers and school personnel as needed
  • Support students to access technology
  • Complete required documentation related to incidents, accidents, discipline, etc.
  • Collect data related to academic functioning/student performance to support instruction
  • Foster positive relationships and engagement with peers
  • Support students with organization of materials, assignments, and schedules
  • May assist with note-taking or scribing
  • May be assigned to different buildings based on student population
  • Ensure accommodations outlined in the DCAP are implemented as needed
  • Assist in the development of portfolios for MCAS and assist in MCAS facilitation as appropriate
  • Support students during specials, lunch, and recess
  • Facilitate arrival and dismissal times
  • Maintain student confidentiality
  • Carry out other assignments designated by the Director
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Regular communication; standing, walking, sitting; use of hands; reaching; stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling; climbing; running
  • Occasional lifting/moving of children or objects
  • Ability to work in a noisy, stressful environment and maintain safety
  • Ability to respond to emergency situations
  • May be exposed to bodily fluids
  • Work in conditions with potential risk of injury or illness; environment may be clean
  • May assist medically fragile or physically disabled students with personal hygiene
  • May assist students with grooming, feeding, or toileting
