The Town of Shrewsbury is seeking an Assistant to Town Manager to serve as a trusted contributor in one of the most visible and impactful offices in local government. Shrewsbury offers a compelling environment for someone starting or accelerating a career in local government. This role is structured to build a strong pipeline for future Department Directors, Assistant Town Managers, or Town Managers through hands-on training and experience.

This position will work directly with Town Leadership, providing administrative service to the Town Manager and Select Board while also working on a number of technical tasks. The Assistant to Town Manager will have the chance to connect with every part of the Town's government and bring their strong technical skill set to provide excellent service.

What You'll Do:
  • Execute administrative operations for the Office of the Town Manager and Select Board, including correspondence, records management, and public inquiries.
  • Coordinate Select Board meetings by preparing agendas, public notices, and meeting materials, attending meetings, and transcribing minutes.
  • Administer local licensing processes, including alcohol and permit licensing, fee deposits, and database maintenance.
  • Support Town Boards and Commissions with agenda postings, minute filings, website updates, and member onboarding.
  • Serve as a key liaison between Department Heads, state agencies, and the Select Board for official reporting and interdepartmental coordination.
  • Conduct research and special projects to assist with Town-wide programs and policy updates as assigned by the Town Manager.
What You Bring:
  • A Bachelor's degree in Political Science, Public Administration, or a related field and 3 years’ experience in a professional office setting (Municipal experience preferred) or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Working knowledge of the principles, practices, regulations, and applicable federal and state laws related to the business operations of a municipality.
  • Strong technical skills using a computer and the ability to pick up processes quickly and work independently.
  • Experience in a municipal office setting is preferred.

The Assistant to Town Manager is a public-facing position working closely with the terrific team in the Town Manager's Office at Town Hall in a shared office space. Standard work hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM;
Tuesday from 8:00 AM to 6:30 PM; and Friday from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM. The Assistant to Town Manager attends Select Board Meetings from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM on Tuesday evenings, and is paid for this time through a stipend and overtime as applicable. The Assistant to Town Manager will also attend Town Meetings and other board and committee meetings as needed.
