Trainee Ophthalmic Assistant - fixed term 9 months

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our friendly team in the Ophthalmology Outpatients department at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital as a Trainee Ophthalmic Assistant. Please note depending upon experience this will initially be a band 2 trainee ophthalmic assistant post. Upon the successful completion of a range of Ophthalmic competencies there will be progression to a Band 3 Ophthalmic Assistant post.
This is a full time fixed-term 9 month position to cover maternity leave.
We are looking for a caring and motivated individual who has a genuine interest in ophthalmology to come & work on a permanent basis in ophthalmology outpatients at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. The successful candidate must have good communication skills and be able to work well as part of a friendly team in a busy and dynamic environment. In return, the post offers the opportunity for further development and training within ophthalmology.
Some weekend and evening working will be required.
Main duties of the jobThe position will involve undertaking a variety of skills such as carrying out visual acuities, visual field testing, ocular coherence tomography, assisting scrub nurses during eye injections and assisting with minor ops.
There will be a requirement for accurate input of patient details and diagnostic testing results into a dedicated ophthalmic database.

Working as part of a team in a busy outpatient clinic. Will be trained to undertake various ophthalmic competencies.

Qualifications- Maths and English at GCSE level 9 - 4 (or equivalent)
- Experience in an ophthalmic setting
- Experience of working in the care sector
- Ability to develop ophthalmic skills
- Ability to work as part of a team
- Ability to adapt to varying workload
- Professional manner
- Awareness of own limitations
- Ability to be flexible within working hours
