Summary
The Town of Shrewsbury, MA is seeking a highly skilled Building Maintenance Craftsman to fill the full-time position of Plumber with the Public Buildings Division within the Department of Public Works. This position is responsible for skilled manual work in the repair, maintenance, and installation of plumbing and gas equipment and related accessories in all Municipal and School Buildings. The Town of Shrewsbury Public Buildings Division is responsible for over 1.1 million square feet of building space spread out among 18 buildings.
The successful candidate must be available for overtime work on nights and weekends. On snow days, the successful candidate must be available to come in early to help with snow removal around sidewalks and doors. This position requires the successful completion of a CORI and a national background check.
What You'll Do:
- Perform skilled manual work to install, maintain, and repair plumbing structures, water and drain pipes, and fixtures across all municipal and school buildings.
- Complete semi-skilled alterations and maintenance of Town property, including tasks related to painting, roofing, doors, locks, furniture, and cabinetry.
- Independently determine the best methods for completing building maintenance and repair functions while adhering to high quality and performance standards.
- Implement and perform scheduled preventive maintenance on all plumbing systems and fixtures to ensure long-term functionality.
- Assist with light carpentry, basic electrical work (such as replacing fixtures or running computer cable), and HVAC repairs that do not require specialized licensing.
- Maintain accurate records of all inspections and repairs using computers and building-specific software for HVAC and lighting systems.
- Participate in seasonal grounds maintenance, including snow removal, trimming greenery, and ensuring the neatness of walkways surrounding public facilities.
- You must possess a valid Journeyman's Plumber License and a Massachusetts Class D Driver's License.
- A high school diploma supplemented by five years of responsible experience in commercial building construction and plumbing installation.
- The demonstrated ability to read and interpret complex engineering blueprints, building plans, and technical specification documents.
- Strong principles of plumbing combined with a general working knowledge of painting, carpentry, wiring, and HVAC systems.
- The ability to effectively prioritize maintenance activities and safely operate various hand and power tools.
- Readiness to work in tight spaces, climb ladders, and frequently lift or move objects weighing up to 50 pounds, with occasional lifting of up to 100 pounds.
- The ability to make regular professional contact with Town personnel, vendors, and specialized contractors to coordinate essential repairs
The Maintenance Craftsman - Plumber spends the majority of working hours traveling to different public buildings in Town. The work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM Monday through Friday, with overtime as needed.
