Research Assistant/Associate, Biology
A PhD Graduate Research Assistantship is available starting Fall 2026 to work in an applied plant pathology research program at the Montana State University Eastern Agricultural Research Center in Sidney, MT.
The student will join a team focused on developing disease management recommendations for crops important in the region. Ultimately, our program aims to increase profitability for farmers and improve sustainability in our region.
This grant‑funded research project focuses on assessing dry bean diseases and improving disease management strategies for irrigated production systems in eastern Montana. The project will involve conducting field surveys, collecting plant samples, identifying key pathogens, and quantifying disease incidence and severity across production areas. The student will contribute to developing research‑based integrated pest management (IPM) recommendations and translating findings into practical outreach materials for producers and industry stakeholders.
The student will develop skills both in the field and in the laboratory and will have opportunities to attend in‑ and out‑of‑state meetings, as well as interact directly with producers, crop consultants, and industry partners.
We are looking for a highly motivated applicant with a strong interest in field‑based research and enthusiasm for collaboration and outreach. Ideally, an applicant will possess an MS degree in plant pathology or a related discipline with demonstrated experience with plant pathogen isolation and identification, or a BS degree with relevant job experience. Excellent written and oral communication, time management skills, and the ability to work independently are also expected.

Students will attend classes at the MSU Bozeman campus and spend the remaining time at the research center in Sidney, MT. Inexpensive on‑site housing in Sidney may be available for students.
This position is contingent upon pending funding, with a decision expected in late April 2026.
