The selected candidate will be placed in the classification in which they meet minimum qualifications.
Transportation Engineer 1 or Transportation Engineer 2 hire will complete ODOT’s Transportation Civil Engineering Program to include a 12‑month training plan & scheduled rotation through the department’s core engineering disciplines:
Planning & Engineering, Construction and Highway Maintenance.
- You will receive a thorough introduction to the three core civil engineering disciplines.
- You will work alongside ODOT professional engineers.
- You will receive hands‑on transportation training & experience needed to further your career as an engineer with ODOT.
- Inspect, document and administer construction projects for the department.
- Review contractor work to ensure compliance with plans and specifications.
- Process payment estimates and change orders on construction projects.
- Problem‑solve at the project level (confer with higher‑level engineers).

Qualifications- Transportation Engineer 1: Bachelor’s degree in engineering;
Accepted for Basic Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (EIT exam) by Ohio Board of Registration for Professional Engineers & Surveyors. - Transportation Engineer 2:
- Valid certificate as Engineer‑In‑Training issued or accepted as equivalent by Ohio Board of Registration for Professional Engineers & Surveyors; 12 mos. experience as Transportation Engineer 1, 85641.
- -Or Bachelor's degree in engineering; valid certificate as Engineer‑In‑Training issued or accepted as equivalent by Ohio Board of Registration for Professional Engineers & Surveyors; 2 yrs. engineering related experience.
- -Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above may be substituted for the experience required, but not for the mandated registration.
All bargaining unit new hires must serve a one (1) year probationary period. Position will be filled pursuant to the provision of the OCSEA/AFSCME Contract.
If operating state-owned vehicle, must show proof of valid driver’s license or must provide own transportation. This position is overtime eligible based on FLSA Standards.
