- Administer transportation projects from the preconstruction meeting through the finalization process, including running meetings, writing change orders, approving materials, and processing estimates for payment.
- Work with contractors to resolve issues in the field.
- Interpret plans for construction and ensure that the contractor complies with plans and specifications.
- Monitor maintenance of traffic operations on projects to ensure that work zones are safe for the public.
- Supervise lower‑level engineers, managers, and highway technicians (inspectors) working on assigned projects.

- Licensed registered professional engineer by the Ohio State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers & Surveyors.
- Have 12 months experience as a group or project leader providing work direction and training to engineering technicians or lower‑level engineers, or 12 months experience in conducting engineering related research (applicable to staff specialist positions).
- If assigned to operate a state vehicle, must possess a valid driver’s license.
- Alternatively, have 12 months experience as Transportation Engineer 2 (85642) and, if operating a state vehicle, a valid driver’s license.
- Equivalent of the minimum class qualifications may be substituted for the experience required, but not for the mandated registration.
