Department Description

Wilson Health’s Surgical Services Department performs more than 4,000 inpatient and outpatient surgeries and other procedures annually across various specialties, including gynecology, orthopedics, ophthalmology, general surgery, ENT, urology, podiatry, plastic surgery, endoscopy, and interventional radiology. The department is staffed by board‑certified surgeons and anesthesiologists, highly skilled registered nurses, surgical technologists, sterile processing technicians, medical assistants, and X‑ray technologists.

Job Summary

Surgery Registered Nurse functions independently in a professional manner as a scrub and/or circulator, providing care for patients in the operating room/endoscopy. The RN facilitates the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures, ensuring a safe operating room environment, proper equipment function, and operative conditions that maximize patient safety.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Complete thorough and ongoing assessments of assigned patients in a timely and professional manner on arrival to the operating room and throughout the OR stay, determining total nursing needs and plans for intra‑operative nursing care.
  • Protect patients from injury caused by chemical, electrical, laser, mechanical, and thermal sources and extraneous objects.
  • Perform interventions necessary to ensure the procedure is performed on the correct site, side, and level.
  • Manage patient specimens in the appropriate manner.
  • Communicate patient status to the appropriate parties throughout the continuum of care.
  • Administer medications safely and correctly.
  • Maintain current education in surgical procedures and related aspects of nursing care. Consult, observe, and assist others to increase personal knowledge.
  • On‑call responsibilities: take a fair share of monthly call and holiday rotation; remain near a phone or pager while on call and notify the nursing supervisor of distance; respond to work within 30 minutes of notification.
Qualifications
  • Current Ohio RN license.
  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing preferred.
  • One to two years of medical‑surgical experience or two years of perioperative services experience preferred.
  • BLS certification within two months of hire and maintained.
  • ACLS certification within one year of hire and maintained.
  • CNOR certification preferred.
