Position: ODOT Mechanic, Shelby County, PN 20061906

Permanent ODOT Mechanic, Shelby County Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance and service on cars, trucks, and equipment.
  • Execute minor repairs and support associated mechanical work.
  • Maintain accurate records of repairs, maintenance, and daily time sheets.
  • Assist higher‑level mechanics with complex maintenance such as engine tuning, system inspections, and electronic diagnostics.
  • Conduct major repairs, rebuilds, and replacement of parts such as carburetors, alternators, pumps, clutches, brake systems, and exhaust systems.
  • Assist lower‑level mechanics with routine tasks, job shadowing, and required paperwork.
  • Operate welding torches for frame repairs and handle tasks like snowplow blade installation, hydraulic system repair, and heavy equipment maintenance.
  • Perform emergency vehicle service onsite, including tire replacement, brake repairs, and guardrail replacement.
  • Operate non‑vehicle equipment such as snowplows, tow trucks, and other heavy equipment; mow grass and clean garage areas.
  • Transport equipment, materials, and supplies to and from job sites.
  • Attend training schools, safety meetings, mechanic meetings, and other related meetings.

Qualifications
  • 24 months of automotive repair and maintenance experience on a variety of vehicles or all types of agency equipment.
  • Valid commercial driver’s license (CDL Class A without air brake restriction, with tanker endorsement) required; must be obtained during probationary period and maintained thereafter.
  • Alternatives: 12 months as an ODOT Mechanic Trainee (Job Code 52151) with a valid CD, or equivalent qualifications as required by the agency.
