SIDNEY CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT

HVAC/PLUMBING MAINTENANCE ENGINEER

260 day contract / 8hpd

Reports to: Maintenance Supervisor

Job Objectives: Provides technical expertise and manual skill in the inspection, servicing, and repair of the district’s heating, air‑conditioning, and ventilation systems. Maintains high standards to ensure that a safe and orderly environment is maintained for educational and recreational activities. Uses each contact with the public as an opportunity to promote a positive impression of the school district.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Post‑secondary technical/trade school graduate is preferred.
  • Completion of a formal apprentice training program is required.
  • Meets all mandated health requirements (e.g., a negative tuberculosis test, etc.).
  • Provides documented evidence of a clear criminal record.
  • Multi‑school or closely related building maintenance experience is required.
  • Holds or is qualified to obtain a low and high pressure boiler licenses.
  • Ability to interpret and apply blueprint and schematic diagram information.
  • Ability to comply with HVAC building codes.
  • Ability to comply with Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and Public Employer Risk Reduction Act (PERRA) regulations.
  • Proficient in microelectronics and other HVAC control systems.
  • Proficient in boiler operations and preventive maintenance procedures.
Responsibilities and Essential Functions
  • Performs all responsibilities and essential functions of maintenance worker I as directed (i.e., File 602).
  • Oversees the operation of the district’s heating, air‑conditioning, and ventilation systems. Performs regular inspections to ensure that all systems are operating correctly. Monitors and regulates controls to ensure economical efficiency.
  • Performs preventive maintenance activities. Identifies and corrects problems to prevent malfunctions and/or unsafe conditions.
  • Maintains work order files. Establishes priorities. Avoids disrupting classroom activities except during emergencies. Consults privately with building staff. Keeps current with assigned projects and required reports.
  • Installs and/or overhauls equipment. Replaces valves, gaskets, bearings, and other system components. Performs plumbing and electrical repairs. Replaces filters, cleans soot, removes corrosion, and lubricates moving parts. Tests and treats water. Maintains equipment and water analysis logs.
  • Prepares boilers for annual inspections and summer shutdowns.
  • Anticipates and is prepared for fire and safety inspections. Maintains clean, safe, and orderly work areas. Escorts inspectors on tours as directed.
  • Regularly advises the maintenance supervisor about work progress, completed projects, and emerging building issues.
  • Maintains an inventory of essential replacement parts and supplies.
  • Helps with the receipt of deliveries. Unloads trucks. Inspects packages for damage. Verifies quantities. Organizes and stores supplies.
  • Complies with MSDS, AHERA, EPA, OSHA, PERRA regulations. Organizes and safely stores all supplies, materials, and equipment. Labels all hazardous materials.
  • Helps the maintenance supervisor develop short‑and long‑range maintenance plans.
  • Helps prepare competitive bid specifications. Helps evaluate work performed by outside HVAC contractors.
