The City of Signal Hill is seeking enthusiastic, energetic and customer service-oriented individuals looking to start a career in the public sector. This recruitment will fill year-round part-time Recreation Leader positions.
The selected individuals should work an average of 20 hours per week, not exceeding 960 hours in a fiscal period. Candidates must be available for nights, weekends, and city-wide special events.

General Purpose of JobUnder moderate supervision, the Recreation Leader provides direction, coordinates, organizes, and conducts a variety of recreational, cultural, and community services programs. This may include park patrol, after school programming, youth sports, fitness activities, and special events. The position may require working various school shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Essential functions, as defined under the ADA, may include, but are not limited to the following duties. Other duties may also be required.
Community Services, Special Events, Recreation Programs & Park Patrol- Respond to patrons’ needs for assistance or information.
- Assist in planning and conducting community events, general community programs, and facility rentals; set up tables, chairs, and equipment for classes, events, activities, and meetings.
- Conduct on-site monitoring and inspection of scheduled programs. Patrol & inspect buildings, facilities, outdoor park areas, and fitness equipment to ensure adherence to rules and ordinances.
- Report and identify facility and park maintenance issues.
- Monitor recreation or park permits.
- Draft reports for distribution to multiple departments.
- Conduct inspections of buildings, facilities, and equipment on a daily basis to ensure sites are safe and clean; recommend actions to supervisor.
- Assist with administrative office work as needed. Use basic computer applications including Microsoft Office Suite, online recreation management software (i.e., Civic Rec or Active Net), and receive payments.
- Maintain department equipment and supplies; organize furniture arrangements and set-ups; clean the program activity area; return supplies, tables, chairs, and equipment to appropriate places.
- Display courteous and professional behavior toward the public and staff.
- Assist in educating the public about enforcement of rules and regulations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Conduct and supervise recreational activities including excursions, crafts, games, lead camp songs, team, and individual sports.
- Instruct at youth sports activities and games, including basketball, softball, football, volleyball, and soccer.
- Instruct fundamentals of play and sportsmanship, ensuring parent and player code of conduct is honored.
- Lead free play and team activities for various age groups.
- Explain, demonstrate and supervise new and original games.
- Assist in supervising special athletic events and programs such as contests, dances, special activity days, meets, tournaments, and special excursions; assist in administering first aid.
- Monitor all activities and enforce rules and regulations to assure safety and welfare of participants.
- Communicate with parents regarding questions or concerns of recreation programs.
- Maintain department equipment and supplies; organize furniture arrangements and set-ups; clean program activity area; return supplies, tables, chairs, and equipment to appropriate places.
- Assist with administrative office work as needed. Use basic computer applications including Microsoft Office Suite, online recreation management software (i.e., Civic Rec or Active Net), and receive payments.
