Position: RECREATION LEADER - SUMMER SEASONAL

General Purpose of Job

Under moderate supervision, the Recreation Leader provides direction, coordinates, organizes, and conducts a variety of recreational, cultural, and community services programs. Recreation Leaders may be assigned to any of the following programs and may be required to work various school shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Including but not limited to, park patrol, after school programming, youth sports, fitness activities, and special events.

Essential functions, as defined under the American with Disabilities Act may include, but are not limited to the following characteristic duties, responsibilities, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. Depending on assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Early Childhood, Youth, Tween Programs, Sports & Day Camps
  • Conduct and supervise recreational activities including excursions, crafts, games, lead camp songs, team, and individual sports.
  • Instructs at youth sports activities and in games including, but not limited to basketball, softball, football, volleyball, and soccer.
  • Instructs fundamentals of play and sportsmanship conducted in recreational activities. Ensures that parent and player code of conduct is being honored.
  • Leads free play and team activities for various age groups.
  • Explains, demonstrates and supervises new and original games.
  • Assists in supervising special athletic events and programs such as contests, dances, special activity days, various meets and tournaments and special excursions; and assists in administering first aid.
  • Monitors all activities and enforces rules and regulations to assure the safety and welfare of program participants.
  • Communicates with parents regarding questions or concerns of recreation programs.
  • Maintains department equipment and supplies; organize furniture arrangements and set‑ups; cleanups program activity area; and returns supplies, tables, chairs and equipment to appropriate places.
  • Assists with administrative office work when needed. Uses basic computer applications including Microsoft Office Suite, online recreation management software programs (i.e. Civic Rec or Active Net), and receive payments.
  • Provide activity instruction and guidance; demonstrate activity; model appropriate behavior.
  • Render aid and assistance to participants, intervene in altercations and arguments, and provide comfort and first aid when needed.
  • Assist in planning and scheduling activities.
  • Maintain participant attendance records.
  • Inspect facilities, grounds, and equipment.
  • Assist in aquatic activities (day camp programs).
  • Prepare accident/incident reports.
  • Enforce rules and regulations to assure the safety and welfare of participants.
  • Conduct inspections of buildings, vehicles, facilities, and equipment daily to ensure sites are safe and clean; recommend actions to supervisor.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
