Job OverviewAssists students in identifying and solving emotional and educational problems, and in adjusting to school and community life by providing strategies.
Responsibilities- Implement programs which include initiating group and individual activities to assist in the academic and social skill acquisition and success of students.
- Observe and analyze student behavior and administer and evaluate screeners to determine students' needs.
- Observe and analyze the classroom environment to provide support for teachers and students.
- Serve on student support teams and special education committees at assigned schools.
- Analyze information gained through record reviews and interviews to determine environmental impact and appropriate resource needs.
- Interview students and parents to discuss issues related to non-attendance and develop a plan of action.
- Provide individual and/or group counseling in response to school-wide crises.
- Participate in professional development activities aimed at current trends and best practices.
- Administer age-appropriate assessment methods and material to determine the needs of students.
- Consult with teachers and other school personnel to obtain information regarding the reason for referral.
- Gather background information on the student’s social history by conducting behavioral observations, making home visits, conducting interviews, and reviewing school records.
- Serve as a member of the interdisciplinary assessment team assigned to each school and work as a team member in making placement decisions, developing intervention plans, and planning programs to meet the special needs of children.
- Communicate case findings and recommendations to teachers and other school personnel as needed.
- Provide in-service training and workshops for teachers and staff regarding mental health issues and proper procedures for the identification and referral of students.
- Organize and conduct specialized programs to include parent training classes and student support activities.
- Act as a member of the school crisis team to provide intervention to students as necessary.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- MA or MEd in counseling/social work required.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Physical DemandsThe employee is regularly required to sit; stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
