Job SummaryResponsible for providing Distribution Engineering Design and Estimating services to Electric Utility Clients on Distribution design projects and third-party joint use attachments. The role may involve providing distribution engineering or third-party pole attachment design work, which includes running modeling software on poles to determine their ability to handle wind loading on current and proposed equipment. Work may entail routine interaction with front line electric utility customers, design & architectural consultants, vendors, builders and outside agencies throughout all phases of a project’s lifespan.
Must be able to work effectively in a matrix environment and have superior interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
- Provide technical support to distribution engineering and field operations for the planning extensions, upgrading and maintenance of the distribution system.
- Prepare cost estimates and work instructions including drawings, material lists and related information necessary to convey design and construction intent.
- Meet with external customers (builders, developers and governmental agencies) concerning service requirements and design options.
- Review customer-provided site development plans, electrical one-lines and panel schedules to calculate load and transformer requirements and design.
- Responsible for running modeling software on poles and equipment to determine the impact on wind loading for current and future conditions. Software packages may include GDT (Graphical Design Tool), Pole-Foreman, and Maxi.
- Perform survey and layout work in the field.
- Interpret property line boundaries, topographic surveys, as-built surveys, construction staking, ROW staking and collection of geospatial points.
- Research and collect property deed information to evaluate existing or proposed easements, establish ownership information and boundary definitions.
- Initiate designs for new construction, conversion or improvement of both overhead and underground distribution facilities.
- Perform distribution line design calculations for structure loading, guying, geometric angle calculations, pole/flicker calculations, conductor sag interpretation, unitized framing design, construction practices and safety guidelines using industry tools and methods.
- Gather information and interpret processes for permit acquisition involving City, County, State and Federal applications.
- May initiate and execute permit applications and inspections to ensure compliance with design requirements and specifications; may include field inspection duties such as patrolling distribution lines to assess current state, future needs, or storm restoration support.
- Provide scheduled or requested status updates to supervisors, customers or other relevant parties.
- Must document activities in accordance with established documentation and document control practices.

- High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
- Associates degree in Electrical Technology or Engineering Technology (or similar discipline) preferred.
- Ten (10) or more years’ experience in a position that directly relates to the responsibilities above required.
- One year of on-the-job experience in graphic tool design or electronic design software relating to the position or industry required (e.g., GDT, Maximo, Pole-Forman or similar).
- The ideal candidate has work experience with a utilities consulting firm or operating company.
- The ideal candidate will have coursework or on-the-job exposure to areas of distribution design such as AC Voltage Generation, Impedance and Voltage Drop, Three Phase Power Systems, System Layout, Overhead Lines, Underground Distribution Systems, Substations, Distributed Generation, Substation Transformers, Distribution Transformers, Fault Interrupting Devices, Fundamentals of Protection and Overcurrent Protection.
- Must demonstrate the ability to understand codes and practices related to the position and apply basic mathematics.
- Must demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively and professionally with a diverse audience (customers, field workers and management).
Work is primarily conducted at project construction sites within the utility company service area and may require occasional travel to other service areas. This may include electric substations, transmission and distribution lines. Interaction with other team members, supervisors and client personnel is expected.
