Position: Operator II, Equipment (Street)

SUMMARY

The Operator II is primarily responsible for operating large mowing tractors, street sweeper, mini excavators, loaders, backhoes, and other light equipment. Also includes the installation of water and sewer main lines and street construction and repairs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide good customer service to both internal and external customers, maintaining positive working relationships with other City employees.
  • Contact residents and business owners in areas where services will be discontinued and explain when service will be shut off and how soon service will be turned back on.
  • Ensure safety on the roadway and public safety and health by performing duties according to established standards.
  • Maintain proper operation and maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking them after use.
  • Perform routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment, report defects or needed repairs to supervisor, and keep equipment clean.
  • Perform on‑call duties as necessary.
  • Carry out all duties in conformance with appropriate safety and security standards.
  • Responsible for street upkeep within the city limits, including repair of asphalt or concrete, signs and posts, street and ditch drainage.
  • Responsible for installation of storm drainpipe, drain boxes, forming and finishing concrete, and installing curb, gutter, and asphalt. Cut, fit, lay, repair, tap, clean, and flush water and sewer main pipes. Construct sewer manholes.
  • Perform unskilled manual labor as required within various maintenance and construction projects in the Street & Infrastructure Divisions.
  • Handle inclement weather duties, such as applying sand and ice melt and removing sand after improved conditions. Operate snow removal equipment such as dump truck with brine unit, sander unit, snowplows, and backhoes as needed.
  • Operate large mowing equipment such as arm and boom mowers, street sweeper, backhoes, wheel loader, skid loader, dump trucks, rollers, mini excavators, and other light equipment as needed.
  • Perform required labor in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including laying water and sewer main lines, pipe laying and back filling, construction of storm drainpipe, drain boxes, curb and gutter, forming and finishing concrete, and asphalt related to new street building.
  • May receive training on equipment such as large excavator, dozer, grader, asphalt and milling machine, and other specialized heavy equipment as needed.
  • Perform traffic control, directing and flagging vehicles.
  • Perform other related duties as required or assigned.

    Education and/or Experience
    • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or three (3) years of related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
    Language Skills
    • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
    • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
    • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of an organization.
    Mathematical Skills
    • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
    • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
    Reasoning Ability
    • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
    • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
    Certifications, Licenses, Registrations
    • Must hold a valid driver’s license.
    • Must be able to obtain a Class B commercial driver’s license (CDL) within 12 months of employment.
