Receives incoming calls, and dispatches appropriate personnel and equipment to the scene of emergencies and non‑emergencies; interviews callers to determine the nature of the problem and resource availability. Enters information into the CAD system and NCIC.
Responsibilities- Receives incoming calls, dispatches personnel and equipment to emergency and non‑emergency scenes, interviews callers to determine the nature of the problem, determines resource availability, and enters information into the CAD system and NCIC.
- Operates radio broadcasting and receiving equipment, computer and teletype equipment, and a multi‑line telephone console. Must speak clearly, work under stress, and make multiple decisions immediately.
- Interviews callers and delivers information through radio and CAD systems according to prescribed procedures.
- Scans CAD computer screens to determine available resources.
- Relays all information to responding units exactly as given by the caller.
- Types commands on a computer keyboard to update calls in CAD, maintaining the integrity of information.
- Upon certification, provides pre‑arrival EMD instructions to callers.
- Acts as the central point for information.
- Maintains integrity and is truthful during performance of duties.
- Works day or night shifts, holidays, weekends (including Sundays), and may be asked to participate in shift bids in accordance with seniority as described in the current Union Contract.
- May encounter belligerent or irate callers.
- Does not act or have supervisory control.
- Enter NCIC documents and requests in the required format and assists other Communication Operators in 2nd checking entries as required by NCIC FBI rules and regulations.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience with computer terminals and/or multi‑line telephone systems.
- Valid New Mexico Driver’s License or equivalent issued by another state.
- Ability to multi‑task and work under pressure as a professional.
- Pass hearing and drug/alcohol test.
- Submit typing test result with application.
- Basic computer and record‑keeping skills.
- Adult level training and professional reading and writing abilities.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to operate radio broadcasting and receiving equipment, computer, and teletype equipment, and a multi‑line telephone console.
- Speak clearly, work under stress, and make decisions.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) is preferred.
- Ability to work with co‑workers and the public in a respectful, courteous, and professional manner.
- Sit up to four hours at one time, up to twelve hours total per day.
- Stand/walk short distances, up to at least two hours per day.
- Crouch, kneel, bend, twist/rotate the waist on a minimum basis as needed.
- Reach arms away from the body or overhead to access dispatching equipment or manuals.
- Work with arms bent for up to four hours at one time, up to twelve hours per day.
- Lifting and carrying short distances up to 40 pounds.
- Use hands and fingers to grasp/manipulate equipment: writing utensils, telephone, paperwork, manuals.
- Use five‑digit dexterity and eye‑hand coordination to operate communications equipment and instrument keyboards in dispatch room.
- Strong hearing and vision, including close vision, and ability to adjust focus to perform all essential duties.
- Office environment, primarily indoors, high‑stress, occasionally requires lifting up to 40 pounds.
- All essential duties are performed indoors in a temperature‑controlled environment; some duties performed outdoors with environmental factors.
- Duties generally performed on an even and dry surface, which may be carpeted or tiled.
- Exposed to intermittent noise factors.
- Work hazards or potential hazards involve high pace and stress in performing job duties.
- Shift work required; weekdays, weekends including Sundays, nights, evenings, days, and holidays. Participates in shift bids in accordance with seniority as described in the current Union Contract.
