Uses appropriate mentoring and co-teaching techniques to support teacher candidate's development as an effective classroom teacher during practice teaching, teacher residency, or capstone clinical experiences in Early Childhood Education (Age 3 to Grade
3), Elementary Education (K-8), Secondary Education (7-12) and Special Education (PreK-12).
* This position requires the ability to travel to and perform work on-site at a New Mexico school.
Duties
* Mentors and coaches practice teachers, teacher resident's, and alternative licensure teachers in the school setting, implementing, and supporting co-teaching as needed. Completing a minimum of 3 classroom observations each semester.
* Collaborates with Teacher Education Program faculty in meeting teacher candidate needs during practice teaching, teacher residency, and alternative licensure capstone clinical experiences.
* Supervises clinical experiences, face-to-face and/or virtually as needed.
* Develops and maintains materials and supports for use in mentoring.
* Collaborates with mentor teachers and partner schools and districts.
* Participates in the process of ongoing personal and professional development. Maintains comprehensive communication among all contacts (internal and external). Models professional standards and ethics in accordance with WNMU philosophy.
* Submits completes required assessments for practice teachers, teacher residents, and alternative capstone clinical experience student by required deadline, according to COE and WNMU procedures.
* Maintains a positive, safe, inclusive student-centric learning environment that supports success by enforcing WNMU policies to include student code of conduct policies, and those established by the Teacher Education Programs Department, College of Education, and Office of Academic Affairs.
* Models professional standards and ethics in accordance with WNMU and the College of Education mission and vision statements.
* Performs other duties as assigned
Education/Background
Master Level Teacher, with the equivalent of a Level II or III license and a minimum of 5 years of experience working in the preK-12 classroom. Knowledge of and experience with multicultural populations is required. Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.
Job Knowledge
Knowledge and experience specific to the complexities of teaching in rural and high-poverty schools including students with high-incidence disabilities, and from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Knowledgeable about research-based practices for preparing quality professionals who can deliver differentiated core standards-based curriculum to students with varied learning and behavior needs. Experience working in diverse ethno-linguistic environments to promote education change and social justice for the success and empowerment of all learners.
Must be sensitive to cultural differences within the University and community. Fluent in Microsoft Office Applications.
Working Conditions/ Physical Demands (With or Without Accommodations)
Normal office, may travel some within the community when needed. May be required to transport normal office equipment and materials. Ability to comprehend and work with a variety of information from various sources. Able to clearly communicate with a diverse population of individuals. Ability to compose correspondence and reports and remain in a sedentary position for prolonged periods of time. May be required to work additional hours or days depending on circumstances.
