Overview

Position located at the Joint Pathology Center, Silver Spring, MD.

The JPC provides cost‑effective, centralized pathology subspecialty expertise, is the sole veterinary pathology training source for the U.S. military, and manages an unparalleled tissue repository. It serves the Department of Defense, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and other federal agencies while partnering with U.S. and international academic and scientific institutions to advance pathology research and education.

Medical malpractice liability insurance is not required for federal civilian healthcare providers as they are covered by the Federal Tort Claims Act (28 U.S.C. § 1346(b)) while acting within the scope of their employment.

Who May Apply: US Citizens Responsibilities
  • Consultation, education, and research in support of the organization’s goals in diagnosing non‑neoplastic and neoplastic diseases of the digestive tract, liver, pancreas, and biliary tree.
  • Prepare scientific papers and reports for publication of research findings.
  • Teach Hematopathology education and research to physicians, residents, and medical students.
  • Serve as a member of an interdisciplinary health‑care team, providing case review for quality assurance.
  • Provide consultation to other pathologists and diagnose consultations.
Qualifications

US Citizenship required. To qualify you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience includes paid and unpaid work, including volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, Ameri Corps) and other organizations. Credit is given for all qualifying experience, including volunteer work.

Basic Requirements for Physician (Gastrointestinal & Hepatobiliary/Pancreatic Pathology)

Degree:
Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. The degree must be accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association, Association of American Medical Colleges, Liaison Committee on Medical Education, Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

A foreign medical school degree must provide education and medical knowledge equivalent to accredited U.S. schools, demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates or a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed pre‑medical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country, or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination.

Licensure

Applicants must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a state, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory.

Graduate Training

After obtaining a MD or DO, a candidate must have had at least one year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting—a one‑year internship or the first year of a residency program in an accredited hospital or institution.

Residency Training

Applicants must have successfully completed the required accredited residency training in Gastrointestinal & Hepatobiliary/Pancreatic Pathology, and have equivalent experience and training equal to at least 10 years. Experience may not be substituted for required residency training in the specialty.

Board Certification

Must be Board Certified in Gastrointestinal & Hepatobiliary/Pancreatic Pathology.
