Position: Physician (Pathology)-Thoracic Pathology GP-0602-14

Overview

This position is located at the Joint Pathology Center, Silver Spring, MD. The JPC provides a cost‑effective, centralized pathology subspecialty expertise; the sole veterinary pathology training source for the US military; stewardship of a tissue repository unparalleled in size, age, and diversity. They serve the Department of Defense, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and other federal agencies. They partner with US and international academic and scientific institutions to advance pathology research and education.

Medical malpractice liability insurance is not required for federal civilian healthcare providers as they are covered by the Federal Tort Claims Act (28 U.S.C. § 1346(b)) while acting within the scope of their employment. A recruitment or relocation incentive may be authorized. Salary negotiation may be available for those candidates who are new to Federal service. Student Loan repayment may be authorized.

Responsibilities
  • Provide expert consultation on complex lung, pleural, airway, and mediastinal (e.g., thymus, lymph nodes) pathology cases.
  • Contribute to the world's largest pathology repository and advancing research in pulmonary, mediastinal, and pleural diseases.
  • Participate in one of the largest digital pathology initiatives, with scanning of approximately 6 million slides.
  • Contribute to cutting‑edge research in pulmonary, pleural, and mediastinal pathology and AI/digital pathology initiatives.
  • Work in a consultative‑only practice focusing on challenging diagnostic cases from military, veteran, and other federal healthcare systems.
  • Able to cross cover another subspecialty in Anatomical Pathology.
  • Demonstrate expertise in pulmonary, pleural, and mediastinal pathology.
  • Cross cover to another subspecialty in Anatomical Pathology.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

US Citizenship required.

Basic Requirement for Physician (Pathology)- Pulmonary and Mediastinal Pathology:

  • Degree:
    Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association, Association of American Medical Colleges, Liaison Committee on Medical Education, Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

    A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school must have provided education and medical knowledge equivalent to accredited schools in the United States. Evidence of equivalency to accredited schools in the United States is demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed pre‑medical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country, or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination.
