Summary Description
Under direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and works in collaboration with the general education teacher. The teacher monitors and evaluates outcomes for students with disabilities and assists in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP). Physical demands are as required by the duties and responsibilities of the job.
Special Requirements:
Teachers are required to attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement. Teachers employed in special education schools or discrete special education service models must successfully complete specific courses provided by MCPS, including behavioral management and nonviolent crisis interventions, and support behavioral interventions as required.
Knowledge of the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) curriculum for the grade/content range of the position and the MCPS special education program. Thorough knowledge of IEP, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, best instructional practices, research‑based reading instruction, multicultural education, assessments, and methods of teaching elementary math (for elementary positions). Familiarity with the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA 2015), Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA 2004), and related state and federal policies.
Ability to provide instructional support, adapt instructional programs and materials appropriately, and work well with students with disabilities, teachers, and parents or guardians. Excellent communication skills. Knowledge of and ability to apply the six performance standards established for the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS).
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in special education. Competence in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment is required. Student teaching in the specific area of exceptionality or two years of teaching experience at a level appropriate to the assignment (elementary or secondary) is required. Other combinations of education, training, and experience that provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary for the position may be considered.
Certification/Licensure:
Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education. Certification in a content area is desirable.
