Position Overview
Under direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and works in collaboration with the general education teacher. The teacher monitors and evaluates outcomes for students with disabilities and assists in developing Individualized Education Programs (IEP). Additional responsibilities include attending school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as required by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement.
Teachers in special education schools or discrete service models must complete additional courses in behavioral management and nonviolent crisis interventions, and may be required to support behavioral interventions.

- Knowledge of MCPS curriculum for the grade/content range and the special education program
- Thorough knowledge of IEP, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, best instructional practices, research‑based reading instruction, multicultural education, and assessments
- Knowledge of methods of teaching elementary math (for elementary positions)
- Familiarity with ESSA 2015, IDEA 2004, and state/federal policies and procedures related to special education
- Ability to provide instructional support and work well with students with disabilities, teachers, and parents/guardians
- Ability to appropriately adapt instructional programs and materials
- Excellent communication skills
- Knowledge of and ability to apply the six performance standards of MCPS Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS)
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in special education
- Knowledge in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment
- Student teaching in the specific area of exceptionality or two years of teaching experience at a level appropriate to assignment (elementary or secondary)
- Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience may be considered
- Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education; a certification in a content area is desirable

Physical demands are as required by the duties and responsibilities of the job. Teachers must attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement.
