Job Title: Para educator Level I, Special Education
Location: Roscoe Nix Elementary School, Silver Spring
Hours: 6.5 hrs per day, 10 months (10/12 of the school year)
Wage: $23.61 – $34.82 per hour (based on years of service)
Grade: Initial level 13 with opportunity to promote to level 14 after completing a six‑month probationary period and required training hours.
Responsibilities- Promote student learning and well‑being to support students with Individualized Education Programs (IEP).
- Facilitate mastery of grade‑level curriculum or Alternate Academic Achievement Standards.
- Support students in general‑education classes throughout the school day and provide individualized or small‑group instruction as needed.
- Perform instructional and classroom‑management supports, and related clerical tasks for teachers and staff in all types of classrooms or learning environments.
- Continue planned instructional activities during a teacher’s temporary absence.
- Knowledge of child development, instructional strategies and policies of Montgomery County Public Schools.
- Ability to assist with implementation of the instructional program and monitor appropriate student behavior.
- Patience and effectiveness when working with children, young adults, and staff.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and perform all required tasks.
- Effective verbal and written communication in English.
- Interaction and support of students with special needs.
- Basic computer skills (Google Workspace, MS Office, web‑based instructional tools).
- Ability to learn and meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
- Associate’s degree required;
Bachelor’s degree preferred. - Minimum of nine credit‑hours related to education (e.g., behavior management, instructional strategies). One year of experience working with students in structured educational settings preferred; if no coursework, required two‑to‑four years of related experience.
- At least 48 college credits and two years of experience in a structured setting such as a daycare, preschool, after‑school program, etc.
- Successful completion of the Para Pro Assessment with a qualifying score of 455 or higher is required.
- Any combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates the necessary knowledge, abilities, and skills may be considered.
Frequent bending, walking, and lifting of objects or equipment up to 50 pounds. Frequent overtime or night work may be required.
Special RequirementsOutside duty may be required. Must accommodate flexible scheduling, changes of location or program, and continue planned instructional activities during temporary absences.
Certification and LicensureNone required.
