Summary
Under the direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and works in collaboration with the general education teacher. Monitors and evaluates outcomes for students with disabilities and assists in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP).
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities- Knowledge of the Montgomery County Public Schools curriculum for the grade/content range of the position and the MCPS special education program.
- Thorough knowledge of IEP, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, best instructional practices, research-based reading instruction, multicultural education, and assessments.
- Knowledge of state and federal policies related to special education (EEA, IDEA, etc.).
- Ability to provide instructional support and work well with students, teachers, and parents/guardians.
- Ability to appropriately adapt instructional programs and materials.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Knowledge and application of the six performance standards for the Montgomery County Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS).
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in special education.
- Fluent in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment.
- Student teaching in the area of exceptionality or at least two years of teaching experience at the appropriate level (elementary or secondary).
- Certificate and license meeting Maryland State Department of Education requirements for Standard Professional Certification I in special education; content area certification desirable.
Salary range: $64,591 – $131,472 based on education and experience.

Special requirements:
Attendance at school meetings, programs, and activities outside instructional day per Montgomery County Education Association agreement. Teachers in special education schools or discrete service models must complete specific courses provided by MCPS, especially behavioral management courses including nonviolent crisis interventions. Teachers in identified schools and programs will support behavioral interventions.
