Teacher, Special Education (Autism), Springbrook HS, 1.0 FTE (260013Q)

Under the direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and works in collaboration with the general education teacher. Monitors and evaluates outcomes for students with disabilities and assists in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP). Physical demands are as required by the duties and responsibilities of the job.
As required by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement, the teacher must attend school meetings, programs and activities outside the instructional day. Teachers employed in special education schools or discrete special education service models are required to successfully complete specific courses provided by MCPS, particularly courses in behavioral management which include nonviolent crisis interventions. Teachers in these identified schools and programs will be required to support behavioral interventions.
Knowledge,Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of the MCPS curriculum for the grade/content range of the position, MCPS special education program; thorough knowledge of IEP, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, best instructional practices, research-based reading instruction, multicultural education, assessments. Thorough knowledge of methods of teaching elementary math if seeking an elementary position. Familiarity with ESSA 2015, IDEA 2004, and state & federal policies. Ability to provide instructional support, work well with students, teachers, and parents.
Ability to adapt instructional programs and materials. Excellent communication skills. Knowledge and application of the six performance standards of the MCPS Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS).
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in special education. Fluency in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment. Student teaching in the specific area of exceptionality or at least two years teaching experience at a level appropriate to assignment (elementary or secondary). Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience may be considered.
Certification:
Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education. Certification in a content area is desirable.
