Summary
Under the direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and works in collaboration with the general education teacher. The teacher monitors and evaluates outcomes for students with disabilities and assists in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP). Attendance at school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day is required as mandated by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement.
Teachers in special education schools or discrete service models must complete specific MCPS courses, particularly in behavioral management and nonviolent crisis interventions, to support behavioral interventions.

Knowledge of the Montgomery County Public Schools curriculum for the relevant grade/content range, the MCPS special education program, Individualized Education Programs (IEP), learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, best instructional practices, research-based reading instruction, multicultural education, and assessments. Thorough knowledge of the Elementary Student Success Act (ESSA 2015), Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA 2004), and related state and federal policies.
Ability to provide instructional support, adapt instructional programs and materials, and communicate effectively with students, teachers, and parents/guardians. Ability to apply the six performance standards of the Montgomery County Public Schools Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS).
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in special education. Coursework in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment. Student teaching experience in the specific area of exceptionality or at least two years of teaching at the appropriate level (elementary or secondary). Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience that demonstrate the necessary knowledge, abilities, and skills may be considered.
Certificate/license:
Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education. Certification in a content area is desirable.
