Job Description

FY27:
Para educator Level I Combo, Special Education (3 hours) & Lunch Hour Aide (1 hour), Oak View Elementary School, 4 hrs per week for 10 months. Final date to receive applications: 7/6/26. The position includes 3 hours of para educator special education and 1 hour of lunch hour aide.

Summary Description

At the direction of the principal, this para educator performs a variety of tasks that promote student learning and well‑being to support students with Individualized Education Programs (IEP). The work focuses on facilitating student mastery of grade‑level curriculum or Alternate Academic Achievement Standards. Students are typically in general education classes and may be pulled out for individualized or small group instruction. The position also provides instructional and classroom‑management supports, and related clerical tasks, to support teachers and other staff in all classroom settings.

All new para educators are hired at grade 13 and have the opportunity to promote to grade 14 after successfully completing the six‑month probationary period and the required training hours. Paraeducators in this class support the following special education services:
Twice‑Exceptional, Learning & Academic Disabilities / Resource Services (HSM, HBS, LAD/RES).

Physical Demands

Frequent bending, walking, and lifting of objects or equipment up to 50 pounds may be required.

Special Requirements

Outside duty and flexible scheduling may be required. Must accommodate changes in location and/or program and continue planned instructional activities during a teacher’s temporary absence from the classroom.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of child development, instructional strategies, and policies of Montgomery County Public Schools. Ability to assist with implementation of the instructional program, monitor student behavior, exhibit patience, work effectively with children, young adults, and staff, follow written and verbal instructions, and perform required tasks. Effective verbal and written communication in English. Ability to interact with and support students with special needs.

Knowledge of standard computer hardware and software, including Google Workspace, MS Office, and web‑based instructional tools. Ability to learn and meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).

Education, Training, and Experience
  • Associate’s degree, required. Bachelor’s degree preferred. College coursework should include a minimum of nine credit hours related to education (e.g., behavior management, instructional strategies). One year of experience working with students in structured educational settings preferred. If no related coursework, then two to four years of experience working with children and adolescents in a structured setting (e.g., daycare, preschool) required.
  • At least 48 college credits and two years of experience in a structured setting such as a daycare, preschool, adult day program, after‑school program, extended day, or school‑/non‑school‑based department.
  • Two years of experience in a structured setting such as a daycare, preschool, adult day program, after‑school program, extended day, or school‑/non‑school‑based department. Successful completion of the Para Pro Assessment with a qualifying score of 455 or higher is required.
  • Any combination of applicable education, training, and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, abilities, and skills may be considered.
