Para educator Level III (SCB), 7hrs/10mos, Springbrook HS, Ad Closes 7/6/26 (26003ZH)
Job Specific Information:
The wage range for this position is between $27.67 and $41.87 per hour, based on years of service.
At the direction of the principal, this para educator performs a variety of tasks that promote student learning and well‑being to support students with Individualized Education Programs (IEP). The para educator may be required to assist students with a range of academic, behavioral, social, emotional, and physical needs, including personal care and medical support. This role may involve working with students who display physical and/or verbal aggression and participating in learning activities off of school grounds.
The para educator is focused on facilitating student mastery of grade‑level curriculum or Alternate Academic Achievement Standards in specialized instructional settings. The position also includes instructional and classroom management support, as well as clerical tasks to assist teachers and other professional staff in all classrooms or learning environments. All new para educators begin at grade 17 and may be promoted to grade 18 after completing a six‑month probationary period and the required training hours.
Demands
Frequent bending, walking, kneeling, running, and lifting objects or equipment up to 50 pounds may be required.
Special RequirementsOutside duty may be required. Must accommodate flexible scheduling and changes of location or program. The para educator will continue planned instructional activities during a teacher’s temporary absence. Specialized training (provided by MCPS) in alignment with the assignment’s special education services is required within six months of starting the position.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Knowledge of child development, instructional strategies, and policies applicable to the assignment.
- Ability to assist with implementation of the instructional program and to monitor and ensure appropriate student behavior.
- Patience and the ability to work effectively with children, young adults, and staff.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and perform all required tasks.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English.
- Ability to interact with and support students with special needs.
- Knowledge of standard computer hardware and software such as Google Workspace, MS Office, and web‑based instructional tools.
- Ability to quickly learn and meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
Bachelor’s degree preferred. College coursework should include a minimum of nine credit-hours related to education (e.g., behavior management, instructional strategies).
