MCPS Official Job Description

Under direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and works in collaboration with the general education teacher. Monitors and evaluates outcomes for students with disabilities. Assists in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP).

• Provide direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities.
• Collaborate with general education teachers to support inclusive learning.
• Monitor and evaluate student outcomes for students with disabilities.
• Assist in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP).
• Adhere to behavioral management practices and support behavioral interventions as required.

As required by the duties and responsibilities of the job.

• Attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement.
• Teachers in special education schools or discrete special education service models must complete specific MCPS-provided courses to meet the needs of students with disabilities, particularly in behavioral management including nonviolent crisis interventions.
• Support behavioral interventions as identified for identified schools and programs.

• Knowledge of the MCPS curriculum for the grade/content range of the position, MCPS special education program.
• Thorough knowledge of IEP, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, best instructional practices, research-based reading instruction, multicultural education, assessments.
• Thorough knowledge in methods of teaching elementary math if seeking an elementary position.
• Understanding of ESSA (2015), IDEA (2004), and state and federal policies and procedures related to special education.
• Ability to provide instructional support and adapt instructional programs and materials as needed.
• Ability to work well with students with disabilities, teachers, and parents/guardians of students with disabilities.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Knowledge of and ability to apply the six performance standards established for the MCPS Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS).

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in special education.
• Fluent in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment.
• Student teaching in the area of exceptionality or two years of teaching experience at a level appropriate to the assignment (elementary or secondary).
• Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience may be considered if they provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively.

• Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education.
• Certification in a content area is desirable.
