SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATIONAt the direction of the principal, the para educator performs a variety of tasks that promote student learning and well-being to support students with Individualized Education Programs (IEP). The role includes academic, behavioral, social, emotional, and physical support, personal care, medical needs, and work with students who may display physical or verbal aggression. The para educator may participate with students in learning activities off of school grounds and is focused on facilitating student mastery of grade-level curriculum or Alternate Academic Achievement Standards.
Responsibilities also include instructional and classroom management support and related clerical tasks for teachers and other professional staff.
- Associate’s degree, required. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- College coursework: minimum of nine credit-hours related to education (e.g., behavior management, instructional strategies).
- One year of experience working with students in structured educational situations preferred. If no related coursework, two to four years of experience in a structured setting such as daycare, preschool, or similar environments is required.
- Successful completion of the Para Pro Assessment with a qualifying score of 455 or higher is required.
- Mandatory documents for eligibility:
- Unofficial university transcript with 48+ credits, OR
- Official evaluated transcript for non‑U.S. credentials, OR
- Unofficial Para Pro Assessment result with passing score.
- Knowledge of child development, instructional strategies, and policies of Montgomery County Public Schools.
- Ability to assist with the instructional program, monitor student behavior, and demonstrate patience.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, in English.
- Ability to interact with and support students with special needs.
- Familiarity with standard computer hardware and software such as Google Workspace, MS Office, and web‑based instructional tools.
- Quick learning of the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
- Frequent bending, walking, kneeling, running, and lifting of objects up to 50 pounds.
- May require outside duty, flexible scheduling, and changes of location or program.
- Continues planned instructional activities during teacher’s temporary absence.
- Specialized training in alignment with the assignment and special education services within 6 months of starting the position.
