Nature

of Work

This is the trainee level of law enforcement work for the Maryland Transportation Authority. Employees in this classification receive instruction in commercial vehicle safety inspections, the operation of specialized mobile equipment, traffic flow direction, and providing information to travelers. As experience progresses, employees assume more responsible and difficult functions. MDTA Police Cadets do not have the power of arrest and do not bear arms.

Responsibilities
  • Receive instruction in commercial vehicle safety inspections, operation of specialized mobile equipment, traffic flow direction, and traveler information.
  • Assume additional responsibilities as experience progresses.
  • Respond to emergency call‑back procedures, 24/7, as required to maintain continuous operation.
  • Perform work outdoors in all weather conditions; may encounter fumes and smoke.
  • Maintain a reliable communication link (telephone or beeper) at own expense for emergency call‑back requirements.
  • Report performance and work status to an MDTA Police Corporal.
Prerequisites

Applicants must be United States citizens and between 18 and 20 years old at the time of application. Applicants who turn 21 by the hiring date are no longer considered eligible for appointment as MdTA Police Cadet.

Education

Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate. Must possess a Class C Maryland Driver’s License valid in the State of Maryland and list the license number and expiration date on the application.

Qualifications
  • Satisfactory completion of a polygraph examination and background investigation.
  • Pass an entrance test and, under a conditional job offer, a physical examination.
  • Complete pre‑employment drug/alcohol testing for current illegal use of drugs and/or prohibited use of alcohol.
  • Successfully complete an agency job‑related agility test.
  • Subject to random and/or post‑accident drug/alcohol testing in accordance with Authority regulations.
  • Subject to a one‑year probationary period.
  • Successfully complete the Cadet training curriculum.
  • Apply for the position of Maryland Transportation Authority Police Officer I before the first recruit class becomes eligible, meeting all qualifications. Failure to apply will result in termination.
  • Mandatory overtime or emergency call back may be required due to the emergency nature of the position.
  • Availability for duty at any required hours, day or night.
