- Performs specimen processing and microscopy procedures, including inoculation of solid and liquid media, preparation and examination of stained smears and wet preparations.
- Performs tests for the detection and/or identification of infectious agents.
- Performs tests for the determination of organism antimicrobial susceptibility.
- Performs other routine and specialized procedures to assure an efficient workflow and appropriate turnaround times.
- Produces clear, concise, and accurate electronic and/or written patient reports.
- Provides verbal patient reports with appropriate documentation.
- Reviews patient reports, logs, etc. for accuracy, clarity, and completeness; makes corrective action as needed.
- Operates and maintains equipment; performs preventive and corrective maintenance and records actions.
- Recognizes and troubleshoots technical and administrative problems; initiates corrective action.
- Participates in the Department’s Quality Assurance and Improvement Program, including documentation and maintenance of quality control records.
- Assists in internal and external education programs; maintains current knowledge of relevant policies and regulations.
- Interacts with physicians, laboratorians, and other professionals regarding patient care issues.
- Utilizes time, material, and equipment resources efficiently, safely, and cost-effectively.
- Works safely with infectious and hazardous substances.
- Follows laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, test analyses, reporting, and record maintenance.
- Identifies problems that may affect test performance; corrects issues or notifies MT III, Laboratory Manager, Director, or Laboratory Pathologist.
- Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from performance specifications.
- Ensures that patient test results are not reported until corrective actions are completed and the test system is functioning properly.
- Assists in training and competency evaluation of other testing personnel; documents performance.
- Assists with evaluation of test methodology appropriate for clinical use.
- Assists in verification of test procedures and establishment of laboratory performance characteristics.
- Incorporates Trinity Health and Holy Cross Hospital mission and Integrity Plan into daily work.
- Performs proper inventory, maintenance, and storage of media, reagents, supplies, equipment, and records; performs other related duties as assigned.
- Bachelor of Science degree in Clinical Laboratory Technology (Medical Technology), biological, chemical, or related science with satisfactory completion of a clinical laboratory educational rotation.
- A baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university including courses in biological science, chemistry, and mathematics – and successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Medical Technologist program.
- or a baccalaureate degree with specified semester hours in biological science (including one semester in microbiology), chemistry, mathematics, and one year of full-time clinical laboratory experience in Blood Banking, Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Immunology, and/or Clinical Microscopy within the last ten years, supervised by a board‑certified pathologist or medical scientist and a certified medical technologist.
- New graduate to 5 years of experience in a clinical laboratory setting.
- Current or eligible ASCP, AMT, or NCA certification as a Medical Technologist; certification‑eligible employees must pass the examination within 12 months of employment.
- Ability to work harmoniously with other personnel.
- Demonstrates basic computer literacy.
- Clear oral and written English communication skills.
- Demonstrated competence in performing the full range of routine and specialized Clinical Bacteriology procedures.
