- Perform respiratory care related procedures under general supervision and medical direction.
- Exercise considerable judgment in accordance with physician's treatment plan and departmental policies.
- Conduct patient/family assessment, resource management, care facilitation, and discharge planning.
- Initiate, monitor and maintain life support systems for residents in the skilled nursing facility.
- Perform airway and equipment maintenance.
- Manage artificial ventilator status as directed by an approved protocol.
- Maintain and troubleshoot mechanical ventilators.
- Participate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation procedures (bag ventilation and closed chest massage).
- Initiate, monitor and document performance of various respiratory care modalities.
- Perform assessment of residents' cardiopulmonary status using history taking, laboratory findings, radiological studies, pulmonary function testing and professional judgment to formulate a respiratory care plan.
- Before treating a resident: check physician's orders for completeness, review orders for diagnosis, ICD‑10 code, type/duration of therapy, medication dosage, FiO2 and frequency, and check resident's chart for pertinent information to determine precautions.
- Observe and chart vital signs, breath sounds, general appearance, breathing exercises; teach and train residents.
- Notify supervisor of new starts and discontinued residents.
- Administer proper technical respiratory care procedures and dispense correct medication dosage; acquire and adjust devices for optimal results.
- Ensure mask, mouthpiece or tracheostomy equipment is comfortable and functioning; regulate flow and pressure.
- Observe respiratory rate/pattern, pulse, breath sounds, medication reaction and difficulty during/after treatment; chart and communicate pertinent information to the resident's nurse.
- Inspect, test, disassemble, clean, reassemble equipment, maintain adequate supply and dispose of equipment properly.
- Assist in emergency cardiopulmonary resuscitation as part of the emergency team; CPR certified.
- Initiate, administer, evaluate response to, and document all therapy modalities ordered by a physician including intermittent positive pressure breathing, handheld nebulizer, percussion, vibration, breathing and cough retraining exercises, deep tracheal suctioning, incentive spirometry, sputum induction.
- Recognize adverse reactions to therapy modalities and take appropriate action.
- Document all resident care services rendered as part of a medical record.
