Main Purpose of Job
The main purpose of this position is to provide counseling and other therapeutic mental health services to adolescents with emotional disabilities, including court‑involved youth. This entry‑level position requires basic knowledge of effective counseling and group leadership techniques, various treatment interventions, theories of human behavior and group dynamics, patterns of interpersonal relationships, and issues of human growth and development. Under close supervision, the position learns to apply principles to practice and assists professional and paraprofessional staff in providing quality care to adolescents on an assigned unit.
This position has multiple vacancies with rotating day (7A‑3:30p) and/or evening (2:30P‑11P) shifts.
- Education:
Completion of 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 12 credit hours in mental health, health, human services, education, or related behavioral sciences including six credit hours in psychology, counseling, addictions or mental health. - Experience:
None. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non‑commissioned officer in related classifications on a year‑for‑year basis for the required education.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with adolescents with emotional disabilities and court‑involved youth.
- Motor vehicle operator’s license valid in Maryland if duties require driving.
- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation training and current certification if required.
- Certification in Life Saving and Water Safety if duties involve a swimming program.
- Successful completion of an in‑service training program and examination approved by the hiring facility prior to a permanent appointment.
- Background investigation by the Maryland State Police before a permanent appointment can be made. A criminal conviction record may be grounds for rejection.
- Provide a telephone number where the employee can be reached.
- Substance abuse testing in accordance with state regulations.
