Director of Payroll

Location: Maryland – 3 days a week in office.

We are supporting a large, complex US organisation with the appointment of a Director of Payroll to lead its payroll function and deliver a significant programme of transformation.

This is a senior leadership role combining operational payroll ownership with Workday optimisation, automation, AI and process redesign.

• Lead end-to-end payroll across a complex, multi-state US population.
• Manage and develop an established payroll team.
• Review and redesign existing payroll processes, controls and operating procedures.
• Drive greater utilisation and optimisation of Workday Payroll.
• Reduce manual processes and introduce greater automation across the function.
• Identify practical opportunities to utilise AI within payroll operations.
• Maintain compliance across multi-state taxation, wage and hour, garnishments, year-end and wider payroll requirements.
• Partner closely with Finance, HR and senior leadership on payroll strategy and transformation.
• Improve payroll reporting, governance and employee service.

• Deep US payroll and multi-state expertise.
• Strong Workday Payroll knowledge.
• Experience transforming or redesigning payroll processes.
• Strong understanding of payroll compliance, controls and governance.
• Comfortable using technology and automation to improve payroll delivery.
• Previous payroll leadership and team management experience.
• Able to operate strategically while remaining close to payroll operations.
• Confident working with senior and executive-level stakeholders.
