The Lead Data Scientist provides technical and management leadership across major program tasks and technology assignments supporting the U.S. Census Bureau's Decennial Transformation and Application Modernization (DTAM) initiative. This role is responsible for establishing project goals and execution plans, directing client-facing activities, and ensuring technical delivery aligns with program objectives. The position carries full accountability for staffing, financial management, delivery methods, and technical oversight across assigned efforts supporting modernization of enterprise data systems, cloud environments, and analytics capabilities.
* This position is contingent upon contract award.
Salary Range$155K – $185K - commensurate with the candidate's skills, experience, location, and qualifications.
On a day-to-day basis, you will:- PhD in Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, or related technical field
- 15+ years of experience in technical leadership, data science, systems engineering, or enterprise IT delivery within large-scale environments
- Leading technical and management efforts on major programs or complex technology initiatives
- Establishing project goals, plans, and execution frameworks aligned to organizational or client objectives
- Managing client-facing delivery responsibilities including financial oversight, staffing, and execution methods
- Interfacing directly with clients and senior leadership, including participation in negotiations and strategic planning
- Making high-impact decisions that affect overall project execution and delivery success
- Enterprise architecture and systems engineering across full software development and operational life cycles
- Application design, development, modernization, and rationalization in enterprise environments
- Cloud and multi-cloud architecture, engineering, and migration strategies
- Requirements management, including end-to-end traceability across the SDLC
- Dev Sec Ops practices, CI/CD pipeline integration, and secure software delivery lifecycle oversight
- Application testing, security, compliance, and operational support processes
- Cloud and multi-cloud environments (including SaaS and cloud-native platforms)
