Role Summary

The Director, Epic Clinical Applications is a key leader within the Information Systems Division at Children’s National Hospital, reporting to the Executive Director of Enterprise Applications. This role provides strategic oversight and leadership for the implementation, optimization, and ongoing support of Epic’s clinical applications across Inpatient, Ambulatory (Primary and Specialty Care), and Emergency Medicine services. The Director partners closely with operational, clinical, and executive stakeholders to translate organizational goals into actionable technology strategies that advance evidence‑based practice, clinical excellence, and integrated care.

Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic leadership and direction for the Epic Applications team, fostering a culture of accountability, innovation, and professional growth.
  • Ensure the team is structured and resourced to meet evolving organizational needs.
  • Build a high‑performing leadership pipeline, mentoring managers and senior staff.
  • Provide executive oversight for incident resolution, major system updates, and change control processes.
  • Develop and oversee the multi‑year Epic application roadmap, aligning with enterprise initiatives and regulatory requirements.
  • Serve as the enterprise owner of Epic applications, setting the strategic vision for optimization, innovation, and alignment with the hospital’s clinical, operational, and financial goals.
  • Align Epic capabilities with clinical and operational priorities, ensuring technology solutions support patient care delivery, revenue cycle optimization, and workforce efficiency.
  • Serve as executive point of contact for Epic and other key technology vendors, ensuring alignment with contractual obligations and system updates.
  • Champion the use of Epic data and analytics to inform strategic decisions, drive operational efficiency, and improve patient outcomes.
  • Establish and lead Epic governance structures, working closely with executive leaders to define priorities and drive investment decisions.
  • Oversee Epic application compliance with HIPAA, CMS, Joint Commission, and other regulatory mandates.
  • Develop and execute executive‑level communication strategies to ensure transparent, consistent messaging about system initiatives and impact.
  • Act as a change agent, driving digital transformation initiatives that maximize adoption, usability, and value realization.
  • Oversee and manage a multi‑million dollar portfolio for Epic applications, ensuring cost‑effective decision‑making and resource allocation.
  • Lead a continuous optimization strategy, leveraging Lean, Six Sigma, and data‑driven methodologies to streamline workflows and enhance system performance.
  • Represent Children’s National in external forums, sharing insights on Epic optimization, innovation, and the evolving role of EHRs in pediatric care.
Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or equivalent related experience (required).
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in healthcare information technology, with a strong focus on clinical applications supporting inpatient, ambulatory, and emergency medicine workflows.
  • At least 5 years in a leadership role, demonstrating the ability to lead cross‑functional teams, drive strategic initiatives, and manage complex implementations or optimizations of Epic systems.
  • Experience in a pediatric or academic medical center setting is strongly preferred.
