Overview
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is a humanitarian organization that responds to global crises by restoring safety, dignity, and hope to millions. The IRC Centers in Silver Spring supports refugees and immigrants in the U.S.
Scope of WorkThe Community Engagement Intern will work to establish strong, mutually‑beneficial connections between the Silver Spring community and IRC in order to garner monetary, in‑kind, and volunteer resources to support humanitarian immigrant clients.
Responsibilities- Conduct outreach to and coordinate meetings with community partners to recruit volunteers based on volunteer needs
- Support overall volunteer programming by onboarding volunteers, researching best practices, and suggesting program improvements based on feedback
- Assist in planning events to recognize community partners and volunteers, deepening community engagement
- Support creation of content for social media, the IRC website, monthly newsletter, and outreach materials
- Track community partnerships across IRC Silver Spring programs
- Coordinate in‑kind donation opportunities
- Acquire detailed knowledge of programs available for refugees and asylees within a humanitarian non‑profit setting
- Develop effective cross‑cultural communication skills with clients
- Learn reporting requirements for resettlement agencies and data capture to improve services
- Minimum commitment of 20 hours per week; 24 hours for Fall 2026 interns
- Availability for some weeknights and weekends (Fall interns)
- In‑person work required at the Silver Spring office
- Passionate about immigration, refugees, and serving others
- Ability to work independently and under pressure in a fast‑paced environment
- Creativity and initiative to follow through on projects
- Excellent oral and written communication skills

Fall 2026 interns are expected to begin with an in‑person orientation on September 7th, 2026 from 9:15AM to 3:30PM.
Internships are unpaid;
Fall interns may receive a per diem reimbursement of $15/day. Unenrolled candidates within 12 months of graduation are considered for volunteer status.
