Job Overview
The Department of Defense (DoD) is offering a Post-Bachelor's or Post-Master's internship at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) in Silver Spring, Maryland for candidates who are currently pursuing or have earned a bachelor's or master's degree.
ResponsibilitiesAs the selected candidate you will:
- Participate in research using molecular biology assays and bioinformatic tools to analyze malaria parasite genomes, selecting genetically diverse strains for controlled human malaria infection (CHMI) studies.
- Engage extensively with internal and external researchers on culture adaptation and cloning of field malaria parasite strains.
- Perform analyses using state-of-the-art software and bioinformatics tools such as DNASTAR’s Genomics Suite and Gene Mapper.
- Stipend determined by WRAIR based on academic standing, discipline, experience, and location.
- Health Insurance Supplement (eligible to purchase through ORISE).
- Relocation Allowance.
- Training and Travel Allowance.
Appointment is twelve months with possibility of renewal; appointments may be extended depending on funding, project assignment, and program rules. The start date will be determined at the time of selection; the position is open to start immediately.

Qualifications- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree earned within the last five years or currently pursuing.
- Preferred disciplines:
Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics, Microbiology, Cell Biology (related disciplines also considered). - Strong laboratory skill set including sterile technique is a plus.
- Good documentation skills and a desire to learn.
- Organized with strong attention to detail.
- Citizenship: U.S. Citizen only.
- Degree:
Bachelor's or Master’s degree received within the last 5 years or currently pursuing. - Disciplines:
Life, Health, and Medical Sciences including Bioinformatics, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Epidemiology, Genetics (Genomic Sciences), Infectious Diseases and Zoonoses, Microbiology.
