Job Overview

The Department of Defense (DoD) is offering a Post-Bachelor's or Post-Master's internship at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) in Silver Spring, Maryland for candidates who are currently pursuing or have earned a bachelor's or master's degree.

Responsibilities

As the selected candidate you will:

  • Participate in research using molecular biology assays and bioinformatic tools to analyze malaria parasite genomes, selecting genetically diverse strains for controlled human malaria infection (CHMI) studies.
  • Engage extensively with internal and external researchers on culture adaptation and cloning of field malaria parasite strains.
  • Perform analyses using state-of-the-art software and bioinformatics tools such as DNASTAR’s Genomics Suite and Gene Mapper.

Appointment Length & Start Date

Appointment is twelve months with possibility of renewal; appointments may be extended depending on funding, project assignment, and program rules. The start date will be determined at the time of selection; the position is open to start immediately.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree earned within the last five years or currently pursuing.
  • Preferred disciplines:
    Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics, Microbiology, Cell Biology (related disciplines also considered).
  • Strong laboratory skill set including sterile technique is a plus.
  • Good documentation skills and a desire to learn.
  • Organized with strong attention to detail.
Eligibility Requirements
  • Citizenship: U.S. Citizen only.
  • Degree:
    Bachelor's or Master’s degree received within the last 5 years or currently pursuing.
  • Disciplines:
    Life, Health, and Medical Sciences including Bioinformatics, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Epidemiology, Genetics (Genomic Sciences), Infectious Diseases and Zoonoses, Microbiology.
