he Microbiologist I will perform entry-level microbiological analyses, including the isolation, identification, and characterization of microorganisms in food, environmental, and related samples. This role involves working in a laboratory environment under general supervision, following established protocols, and supporting research, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance activities.
Assist with laboratory procedures and processes related to isolation, cultivation, identification, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and systematic classification of bacterial enteric, zoonotic, and mycotic pathogens. Assist with serological, microbiological, and molecular techniques to rapidly identify and characterize such pathogens;
Assist with the implementation of methods and procedures to collect data and conduct experiments and studies, making adjustments in methods and procedures as appropriate. Assist with the preparations of written documents, reports, and analyses or various scientific projects and programs. In general, work complexity and responsibility will be greater at higher levels.
- Develop/improve/optimize methods to detect/isolate/characterize foodborne pathogens from soil, water, food contact surfaces and produce using state of the art technologies.
- Collect produce, soil, biological soil amendments, and water samples from different environments identified by FDA-related centers/offices.
- Perform phenotypic, phylogenetic, and taxonomic classifications of foodborne pathogens.
- Work on the development of protocols to test the survival and transfer of foodborne pathogens during produce growing, harvesting, washing, and holding activities under controlled environment agriculture.
- Work on the determination of risk factors and mitigation strategies for reducing transmission and persistence of human pathogens during growth, harvest, post-harvest, and retail.
- Provide a technical report describing program progress which documents and summarizes the results of work completed throughout the entirety of the applicable task order year.
- Bachelor’s degree relevant degree in a subject such as biology, applied biology, microbial science, microbiology, or biological or biomedical science
- Analytical thinking skills and have good verbal and written skills
- Basic knowledge of microbiological principles and techniques.
- Experience with sterile technique and standard laboratory equipment.
- Ability to follow detailed written and verbal instructions.
- Good organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Proficiency with basic computer applications (e. g., Microsoft Office, laboratory information systems).
- Experience working in an accredited laboratory.
- Familiarity with molecular microbiology techniques
- Knowledge of food safety regulations and microbial pathogens relevant to foods.
