Overview

Agency Adult Correction Division COO - Operations. Position:
Correctional Sergeant III (S), Position Number , Grade NC09.

• Report to a Correctional Lieutenant III and provide first-line supervision to Correctional Officer III staff in a close custody institution with restrictive and controlled housing.
• Arrange work schedules to ensure shift coverage, assign lower-level custody staff to posts, implement operational procedures, and ensure rules and regulations are followed according to policy.
• Ensure staff are fully trained and that proper conduct, actions, and procedures are followed. Oversee officer activities and performance by maintaining facility security through regular inspections.
• Ensure compliance with governing regulations and standards relating to facility maintenance and health and safety of offenders.
• Lead staff in carrying out tactical assignments, respond to emergency situations, and provide directions during drills, searches, and emergencies.
• Maintain custody, security, and welfare of offenders; refer offenders to restrictive housing for temporary assignment when appropriate.
• Conduct and/or supervise searches of offenders, their living quarters, and work areas for contraband.
• Investigate and act appropriately regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints.
• Prepare and review a variety of reports, complete annual performance evaluations, and assist in assessing, evaluating, and implementing employee discipline.
• Perform other related duties, as required.

• Knowledge of facility operations.
• Knowledge of Prisons’ policies and procedures.

• High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of experience as a Correctional Officer; or
• Two years of experience as a Correctional Officer III; or
• An equivalent combination of education and experience.

• MUST be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
• To be considered for a Correctional Sergeant III position, ALL applicants must meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302), pass a criminal background check, produce a negative drug screening result, complete medical and psychological evaluations, and possess a valid driver’s license.

The Division of Institutions manages daily operations of state-operated prison facilities. Facilities are categorized by custody levels and house individuals serving felony convictions. Southern Correctional Institution is located in Troy, NC and houses up to 700 male offenders.
