Job Overview
The Sheet Metal Worker is responsible for the installation, fabrication, and handling of a variety of sheet metal components, including coping metal, gutters, downspouts, sub-flashings, roof panels, wall panels, and custom metal work. This role requires following safety protocols, using proper tools and equipment, and working closely with other trades and team members to ensure projects are completed efficiently, safely, and to high‑quality standards.
Depending on experience, responsibilities may include apprentice duties, journeyman work, or foreman‑level leadership and supervision.
- Set up ladders, scaffolding, and safety equipment according to OSHA guidelines.
- Assist with loading, unloading, and organizing project materials and equipment.
- Cut, notch, and layout metal according to measurements and specifications.
- Fabricate miters, offsets, and other custom sheet metal details on‑site.
- Operate powered lifts, scaffolding, and other equipment safely.
- Use and maintain all hand and power tools properly.
- Follow safety procedures for all tasks and work environments.
- Work collaboratively as part of a team and communicate effectively with supervisors and other trades.
- Follow direction from the foreman or experienced journeyman.
- Load and stock trucks with necessary materials, tools, and equipment.
- Actively seek opportunities to learn and assist with project work.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization on the job site daily.
- Learn proper use of trade tools and acquire skills progressively.
- Communicate absences, time‑off requests, and job concerns to the foreman or superintendent.
- Lead by example, arrive on time, and set a professional tone for the crew.
- Pre‑plan daily work and ensure the team understands project scope and goals.
- Review and understand job plans, prints, and project specifications.
- Track and manage project materials, inventory, and production on‑site.
- Complete daily documentation, including time sheets, production reports, and photographs.
- Address safety hazards and ensure compliance with all safety regulations.
- Supervise and direct crew members, including discipline when necessary for safety or compliance issues.
- Communicate regularly with the superintendent or project manager regarding progress, issues, or material needs.
- Work confidently with general contractors or escalate issues to management when necessary.
- Travel to out‑of‑town job sites as required with sufficient notice.
- Safely climb ladders, scaffolding, and work at heights.
- Lift and move up to 100 lbs using proper lifting techniques.
- Maintain balance on narrow, slippery, or uneven surfaces.
- Perform bending, stooping, kneeling, pushing, and pulling as required.
- Use hands repetitively for tool operation, gripping, and handling materials.
- Maintain adequate visual and auditory acuity for safe operation of tools and machinery.
- Exposure to extreme temperatures, including heat exceeding 100°F or cold, frost, snow, and ice.
- Work in varied weather conditions such as rain, sleet, hail, or strong winds.
- Exposure to heights and roof edges.
- Work around other trades and potentially hazardous equipment or materials.
- Experience in sheet metal installation, fabrication, or roofing/exterior systems preferred.
- Familiarity with hand and power tools, lifts, and safety equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret job plans, blueprints, or specifications.
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and teamwork skills.
- Willingness to learn (apprentices) and lead (foremen) effectively.
- Ability to communicate clearly with supervisors, crew members, and other trades.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for job site travel.
- Previous experience in roofing, siding, gutters, or other exterior construction.
- Knowledge of OSHA safety standards and procedures.
- Ability to train and mentor junior team members.
