Building Maintenance, Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
Responsibilities
- Supervise building maintenance technicians and skilled tradesmen such as plumbers, carpenters, painters, welders, locksmith, masons, sign fabricators, and electricians in the building maintenance section.
- Perform general and specialized administrative duties such as reviewing and approving leave requests; counseling employees, writing interdepartmental reports, attending meetings, and corresponding with upper level supervisors and other departments on daily activities at BWI Marshall Airport.
- Maintain safe operating practices and enforce them through building maintenance inspections, writing, and following up on work orders through the automated work order system.
This is an emergency essential position. All employees designated as emergency essential are required to be available to work during weather, operational and/or disaster emergency conditions. The position requires work in a 24‑hour facility and you must be available to work any shift as required by the operational needs of the MAA.
QualificationsMinimum Qualifications
- Education:
Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate. - Experience:
Five years of experience in construction, facilities maintenance, grounds, or skilled trades work. One year of this experience must have been in a lead worker or crew leader capacity. The experience must include at least two years of maintenance work involving interaction with the public in large facilities or maintaining outdoor grounds.
- This statement contains a selective qualification, which is more focused in scope than the Minimum Qualifications for this classification.
- Work experience may be substituted on a year‑for‑year basis for the required education. U.S. Armed Forces military service experience may be substituted for the required education and experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
- Possession of and maintenance of a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) valid in the State of Maryland, depending on the type of equipment operated, may be required for continued employment. This includes obtaining and maintaining a valid US DOT Medical Card (or MVA‑issued waiver) every two years.
- Employees may be required to satisfy the employing administration's training and certification program requirements during the probationary period and to obtain and maintain permanent status in this classification.
- Employees seeking transfer to another administration may be required to satisfy that administration's training and certification program requirements.
- Employees assigned to the BWI Airport must obtain an MAA Airfield Operators Permit in accordance with the Code of Maryland Regulations , Control of Vehicular Traffic on the Air Operations Area, prior to permanent appointment.
- Applicants may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform and supervise maintenance work on high structures and in cramped quarters in tunnels, underground, and in buildings.
- Employees must be willing and available for duty at such hours, day or night, as may be required to maintain continuous and safe operation of a facility.
- Employees are subject to call in and must maintain a reliable communication link at their own expense for emergency callback requirements.
- Employees who work with or may be exposed to hazardous materials such as asbestos, lead‑based paint or chromium may be required to undergo periodic medical testing, pass hazardous materials training, and have the ability to wear a respirator.
- Employees in this classification are considered "Essential Employees" and may be required to sign and agree to all policies and procedures relating to "Essential Employee" status.
- Candidate will be subject to pre‑employment drug testing in accordance with the Transportation Code of Maryland Regulations 11.02.11, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs. Employees in this classification are also subject to substance abuse testing per the same regulations.
