Plumber (Skilled Trade Specialist II)
Position located at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI Marshall Airport), MDOT Maryland Aviation Administration.
ResponsibilitiesEmployees in this class are required to perform various duties such as:
- Installing, repairing, and maintaining plumbing and natural gas equipment, piping, valves, and fittings in compliance with the Maryland State and International Plumbing Codes.
- Installing valves and piping from “A” to 12”. Installation and repairs to showers, lavatories, water closets, faucets, and urinals.
- Fitting copper pipes and fittings using assorted flux, solder, and brazing materials.
- Using different types of gases (e.g., MAP and acetylene) to fit and cut copper and steel pipes; installing steel water and natural gas using power threaders and groves to cut, thread, and grove the ends of the piping.
- Troubleshooting and repairing sewage ejector pumps, motors, and controls.
The work requires physical exertion, may be performed outdoors under all weather conditions or inside an MDOT MAA building, and may require moving objects over 50 pounds. Employees may work on high poles, in cramped quarters, or underground. The position requires availability for rotating shift work, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, and is an essential employee subject to 24‑hour emergency call‑back procedures.
Minimum Qualifications- Education:
Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate. - Experience:
Three years of experience performing skilled trade work in plumbing. - Selective
Qualification:
Two years of that experience must have involved service and repair of various plumbing hardware in commercial and residential settings, including faucets, water heaters, utility sinks, ejector pumps, grease interceptors, troubleshooting leaks, and using drain‑clearing machinery.
Additional qualification options:
- Additional work experience performing skilled trades may be substituted on a year‑for‑year basis for the required education.
- A certificate from a vocational‑technical school with a major in one or more of the skilled trades may be substituted for one year of the required general experience.
- U.S. Armed Forces military service experience in utility repair classifications or construction and engineering specialty codes may be substituted on a year‑for‑year basis for the required experience.
Employees are required to possess a valid Maryland motor vehicle operator’s license and must list license number and expiration date on the application. Depending on equipment operated, a Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License may be required. An Airfield Operators Permit is required. Employees may be required to satisfy agency training and certification program requirements.
Essential Employee RequirementsEmployees are subject to an extensive pre‑employment security background check, and will be required to maintain reliable communication links for emergency call‑back. Exposure to hazardous materials may require periodic medical testing and hazardous materials training. The position is an “Essential Employee” and requires agreement to all Essential Employee policies and procedures.
