About the Role
The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) owns, operates, and maintains eight major toll facilities comprised of four bridges, two tunnels and two turnpikes across the State of Maryland. The current vacancy is located in Prince George’s County, MD. Employees may be used to fill future vacancies at other MDTA facilities.
Responsibilities- Performing standard preventive maintenance services such as oil changes, lubricating chassis joints, and overall vehicle inspection as part of routine maintenance.
- Assisting higher‑level mechanics in performing major repairs and extensive overhauls on equipment.
- Checking repairs or replacing various standard components and subassemblies such as ball joints, brake lining, and other integral parts on the vehicle.
- Cleaning and caring for tools and equipment and shop facilities.
- Inspecting and determining the nature of routine motor vehicle malfunctions.
Employees in this classification are considered essential employees and must be on call 24 hours a day. They must provide a telephone number for emergency call‑back. In the event of hazardous weather or highway conditions, employees will be called to duty during off‑hours. The work may require physical exertion outdoors or indoors and may involve moving objects weighing over 50 pounds.
Minimum QualificationsEducation: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high‑school equivalency certificate.
Experience: Three years of experience servicing, maintaining and repairing motor vehicles, gasoline and/or diesel engines, or heavy‑duty construction equipment. One year of the required experience must include servicing and repairing heavy‑duty construction equipment and diesel engines.
Additional qualifications may substitute the required education or experience per the following policy:
- 1. Applicants may substitute additional documented and relevant experience repairing, servicing and maintaining automobiles, trucks, buses or comparable equipment on a year‑for‑year basis for the required education.
- 2. Completion of an accredited training program for Heavy Equipment or Diesel Repair may substitute one and one‑half years of the general experience.
- 3. U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as defined under the Minimum Qualifications may be substituted on a year‑for‑year basis.
- 4. Certification as a Technician by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) can substitute for two years of the required education. (The two years of experience used to qualify for ASE testing is considered an integral part of this substitution and cannot also be considered separately to meet Education or Experience Minimum Qualifications.)
- 5. Certification as a Master Technician in one or more subject areas by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) can substitute for the required education.
Applicants must list Class C motor vehicle operator’s license;
Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required during the probationary period, depending on the type of equipment operated. Additional endorsements for Hazardous Materials and Tank Vehicles may apply.
Employees must be available for duty at any hour and maintain reliable communication. They may be required to wear a respirator and undergo medical testing if exposed to hazardous materials. Pre‑employment drug testing and substance‑abuse testing are required.
