Position: Heavy Equipment Maintenance Technician (HEMT II)

MDTA owns, operates, and maintains eight major toll facilities comprised of four bridges, two tunnels, and two turnpikes across the State of Maryland. Nature

of Work

This position involves journey‑level repair and maintenance work on motor vehicles and/or construction and maintenance equipment. Responsibilities include performing routine repairs, conducting standard preventive maintenance, and assisting with major automotive repairs at the Intercounty Connector (ICC) facility (MD 200). The duties and responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Performing standard preventive maintenance services such as oil changes, lubricating chassis joints, and overall vehicle inspection as part of routine maintenance;
  • Assisting higher‑level mechanics in performing major repairs and extensive overhauls on equipment;
  • Checking repairs or replacing various standard components and subassemblies such as ball joints, brake lining, and other integral parts on the vehicle;
  • Cleaning and caring for tools and equipment and shop facilities;
  • Inspecting and determining the nature of routine motor vehicle malfunctions.

Employees in this classification are considered essential employees and are subject to being on call 24 hours a day as may be required to maintain the continuous operation of a facility. Employees must provide the agency with a telephone number where they can be reached. In the event of hazardous weather or highway conditions, employees will be called to duty during off‑hours to maintain and repair equipment.

This maintenance work requires physical exertion that is performed either outdoors under all weather conditions or inside a building. On some assignments, employees may be required to move objects weighing over fifty pounds.

Employees in this classification receive supervision from a Heavy Equipment Maintenance Supervisor I or other designated official. The current vacancies are located in Prince George’s County, Anne Arundel County, Baltimore City, and Cecil/Harford Counties, MD. The established list from this recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies at other MDTA facilities.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Three years of experience servicing, maintaining and repairing motor vehicles, gasoline and/or diesel engines, or heavy‑duty construction equipment. One year of that experience must include servicing and repairing heavy‑duty construction equipment and diesel engines.

  • Applicants may substitute additional documented and relevant experience repairing, servicing and maintaining automobiles, trucks, buses or comparable equipment on a year‑for‑year basis for the required education.
  • Completion of an accredited training program for Heavy Equipment or Diesel Repair may be substituted for one and one‑half years of the general experience. The accrediting body for the training program must be listed on the U.S. Department of Education’s Database of Accredited Postsecondary Institutions and Programs.
  • U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as defined under the Minimum Qualifications may be substituted on a year‑for‑year basis for the required education and experience.
