Position: Refugee Health & Social Integration Intern (Summer 2026)

Opportunity:
Refugee Health and Social Integration Intern

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is seeking a full‑time internship (3‑month commitment, minimum 15 hours per week, preferred 30 hours) to support case management for refugees and vulnerable immigrants in Silver Spring.

SCOPE OF WORK

Work closely with case management teams to assist IRC clients in navigating the U.S. healthcare system and accessing community resources.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assess client needs and priorities and collaborate to create service plans.
  • Provide ongoing case management and guide clients to appointments with lawyers, health care, and public benefit providers.
  • Engage in community mapping to identify and refer clients to external resources.
  • Participate in community outreach to identify potential clients and increase IRC visibility.
  • Assist in maintaining quality control of files and other related tasks as assigned.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
  • Gain case management experience by working directly with clients.
  • Acquire detailed knowledge of the U.S. healthcare system.
  • Learn reporting requirements for resettlement agencies and how to collect data to improve services.
  • Improve communication skills and client interaction.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
  • Minimum 3‑month commitment; 15 hours per week required (30hours preferred).
  • In‑person work required in the Silver Spring office.
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license, reliable access to a personal vehicle, and active auto insurance.
  • Ability to work independently and under pressure in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Strong organization, attention to detail, excellent communication and writing skills.
  • Interest in human rights and proven teamwork in dynamic settings.
  • Willingness to use public transportation with clients to orient them to bus routes.
  • Language proficiency in Arabic, Amharic, Tigrinya, Swahili, Farsi or French is desirable (not required).
