Under the supervision of the Director of Employment & Meaningful Day Services, the Community Activities Assistant supports people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in exploring and engaging in meaningful opportunities throughout Montgomery County and surrounding communities. Using a person-centered approach, this role helps people build relationships, pursue personal interests, increase independence, and participate fully in their communities.
Job-Specific Duties and Responsibilities- Assist the Community Activities Coordinator in identifying, coordinating, and facilitating community activities, educational opportunities, social connections, and skill-building experiences for the people we support.
- Promote community inclusion, relationship‑building, independence, self‑advocacy, and self‑determination through person‑centered supports.
- Provide travel training and transportation support, including route planning, schedule interpretation, fare payment, and transportation safety instruction to increase independence and confidence using public transportation.
- Support participation in community outings, volunteer opportunities, recreational experiences, and other meaningful day activities throughout Montgomery County and surrounding areas.
- Ensure the health, safety, and welfare of the people we support during aquatic and water‑based activities, including swimming programs and recreational outings.
- Complete required documentation accurately and on time, and participate in team meetings, trainings, and other program‑related activities as assigned.
- Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Experience supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities preferred.
- Commitment to person‑centered practices and community inclusion.
- Ability and willingness to participate in aquatic activities and provide support in swimming environments; must be comfortable in the water and able to swim proficiently.
- Ability to independently navigate Montgomery County and assist people we support in safely using public transportation to access community activities, employment, volunteer opportunities, and other destinations.
- Ability to obtain required certifications and complete background screenings.
