Position OverviewA research fellow position in the Office of Biostatistics and Pharmacovigilance (OBPV) at the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER), FDA, Silver Spring, Maryland. The project focuses on developing novel AI/machine‑learning and bioinformatics algorithms, optimizing existing tools, and enhancing the High‑performance Integrated Virtual Environment (HIVE) infrastructure.
Responsibilities- Develop and implement novel scientific, bioinformatics, and AI/ML algorithms.
- Optimize and adapt existing analytical tools for performance and scalability.
- Suggest and implement new software solutions and computational tools.
- Maintain, support, and test applications for bugs, redundancies, and security issues.
- Standardize and automate application‑level processes.
- Maintain and improve components of the bioinformatics and AI‑focused HPC environment.
- Gain experience working with large‑scale biological datasets, including genomics, transcriptomics (bulk and single‑cell), and proteomics data.
Appointment Length: one year, renewable upon recommendation and availability of funds.
Level of Participation: full‑time.
Participant Stipend: a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.
Participants are not employees of FDA and do not receive employment‑related benefits.
Eligibility and Qualifications- Bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, AI/ML, Mathematics, Computer Science, or related field; or currently pursuing a degree with completion before the appointment start date (degree received within five years of start date).
- U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or foreign national with eligible immigration status.
- Experience with Python and scientific/AI libraries (e.g., PyTorch, Tensor Flow, Pandas, Num Py).
- Experience with R or other object‑oriented programming languages.
- Experience with Linux environments and shell scripting.
- Knowledge of bioinformatics concepts such as sequence alignment, clustering, and omics data analysis.
- Familiarity with high‑performance computing (HPC) environments.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Excellent communication skills.
